June 2019 Chapter Meeting

Posted by Administrator Tuesday, June 11, 2019

Please join ISSA KC chapter members and other security professionals at Hereford House in Leawood on June 27, 2019.

Topic: MITRE ATT&CK

The MITRE ATT&CK framework is a very effective tool for "adversary emulation", cataloging how adversaries behave, what they're trying to do, and the techniques used to accomplish their means. Moreover, the framework aims to provide a common language and vocabulary for practitioners, vendors, and all parties working to understand common threat actors and techniques.

In November 2018, MITRE evaluated a subset of techniques in an open-test environment, working with vendors to analyze their detection capabilities against these common techniques. With the results of this first evaluation now published, many are trying to make sense of results to understand the efficacy of different solutions in the marketplace today.

April 25th Chapter Meeting

Posted by NB Wednesday, April 17, 2019

Please join ISSA KC chapter members and other security professionals at Lidia's Restaurant.

Topic: Be Aware of the Risk Inside

Summary:
Historically organizations prioritize external threats above insider threats, however employees pose major security vulnerabilities and account for nearly 90% of all security incidents. Some incidents are malicious/intentional (29%), while the majority are unintentional (71%). Incidents come in many forms, including information and physical property theft, unauthorized access, workplace violence, sabotage, security compromise and espionage. Whether malicious or accidental, insider incidents can weaken customer trust and cause irreparable transactional and reputational damage for a company. Understanding the potential threats and creating a holistic approach to managing insider risk is the key to safeguarding your ‘keys to the kingdom’.

Posted by NB Tuesday, March 12, 2019

Please join ISSA KC chapter members and other security professionals at Hereford House in Leawood on March 28, 2019.

    Topic:
Innovation & Virtualization, keeping creativity alive virtually

    Topic Summary:
Innovation is what is required for organizations to be successful, yet in today’s environment of speed and agility, the only way to achieve such goals is through virtualization. Are you struggling with what virtualization means to you and your organization? Do you understand how to maintain an innovative environment while pressing forward into the virtualized world?

You must foster a specific environment to keep innovation moving in the virtual world. In order to engage clients more intimately and longer term your organization must be able to work without the limits of physical location and bureaucracy. Every organization can benefit from a virtualized environment to improve its competitive advantage and operational efficiencies through innovative virtualization.

    Key Takeaways
    1. Identify innovation and how to create a safe environment for it to happen
    2. Abstract the software from the hardware to allow employees to work without boundaries
    3. Learn how to keep bureaucracy from destroying your virtualization initiative
    4. Visualize your own challenges to virtualization and learn to overcome them
    5. Implement a service driven model to improve IT efficiencies
    6. Avoid strangulation of innovation through the silo trap

    January 2019 Chapter Meeting

Posted by Administrator Friday, January 4, 2019

Please join ISSA KC chapter members and other security professionals at Lidia's Restaurant.

Topic Summary:  Today's modern operating systems, like iOS and Android, are designed for ubiquitous and wireless access from anywhere in the world, and have very different use cases and security requirements compared with traditional PCs and servers. Mobile devices are on and connected 24/7, and often owned and managed by individuals, dramatically increasing the attack surface relative to PCs.  Malicious hackers have shifted much of their attention to these new operating systems that may provide a direct link into large companies with valuable assets worth stealing. Today, their methods are less focused on broad and annoying attacks on consumers and more on targeted attacks on specific individuals in specific organizations who have the right access levels to high-value assets. Well-researched social engineering exploits, combined with system vulnerabilities, make these attacks highly effective, even against smart and educated individuals.  In this discussion we will cover the landscape of cyber threats to mobile devices, attacker motivations and steps you can take to protect your mobile endpoint.

Speaker bio:  Cory Ronek is a member of the Mobile Security Specialist Team at Symantec based in Chicago.  Cory joined Symantec from the acquisition of Skycure, is responsible for the North Central Region, and has 15+ years industry & security experience.  Cory's Team is focused on helping customers solve the problem of securing enterprise mobile access to corporate data.
